The Art of Journaling

Journaling is an art form! I have recently been introduced to other forms of journaling other than the same old ‘write what happend and how you feel about it’ way and I can honestly say that I a super excited to get back into journaling. As a young girl, I had a diary. I had tons of them and would write in the everyday. Sometimes I would just draw in them and other times I would just write one word to describe my day across the page. It was my way to art journal.

I first came across this journal called the Hobonichi Techo, a popular Japanese planner/journaling system. I was intrigued by the artistic look of them and the minimalist design elements of the journal itself. I wanted to do this… then I seen the prices. 2,571 yen (thats $25.22 USD)! That was for the actual journal. Then you need a cover! Right? The Art of Journaling is about making your journals look good… so why not get a pretty cover to express myself. I picked out a nice, simple black cover… 4,115 yen which comes to $40.37 USD. My total is at $65.59 (and this is without taxes and shipping) My oh my! That just wont do for me! My husband and I are looking to buy a house and start our family soon and we cannot be buying pleasure items for that price right now. So goodbye Hobonichi Techo!

The other journaling system I came across that had a lot more customizing and prettier journal books/planners was Filofax. This one seems to be the most popular of them all and I scanned Pinterest for hours looking at how people set them up and make them look really pretty! So I went to go buy one for myself. Yikes! (yes, here we go again crunching numbers) I made up my mind I wanted to A5 size. Its a good size to pack around and it would fit into my bag fairly easy. $145 was the one I liked the best. It was this really nice purple/plum color and it was leather. Yes, it comes with all kinds of stuff to help me organize my life, but I still don’t think it was worth $145. I went to my local office supplie stores to find a cheap planner book…. and I walked out with empty hands. Cheap does not exist with planner binders. I was about to give up and just use a $2.00 notebook I have laying around my house. Then it hit me. Why not just make my own! I am an artist and graphic designer. I could make my own pages and make my own book to put it all in. I could decorate it like all those other awesome people I stalked on Pinterest!

I looked into making my own leather A5 binder, but found I had no penitence for it, I wanted it now! I went to Staples and bought a A5 3 ring binder. In Purple! lol Bought some paper inserts and a clear holder for my pens, sticky notes and paper clips. I was going to make all my journaling pages in inDesign and print them out, but decided not to print out everything and just draw/write it all. I have this weird obsession with writing things. I love to write! When I say write, I mean the actual writing, not so much the words and sentences it forms… I stumbled upon another clever way of journaling too, Bullet Journaling. I decided to incorporate a planner, to do’s, bullet journal, drawing and your standard journaling entries and I got it all to fit inside my cheap binder. I think my total came to be $15 for my starter binder, paper and pens and that I am very veyr pleased with! I don’t have much in my journal since I just started and still need a few more supplies to help decorate, but I am well on my way to having an awesome journal with my whole life’s story written in it. I took a few pics of my journal and its set up. These were taken with my iPhone at work, so they aren’t the best quality, but they work!

I acknowledge my spelling and grammar is off and not very good… sorry for that. It is a goal I am working on on this blog journey!
